Speculating About AI and the Future
Discussing technology and AI requires expressing predictions, certainty, and possibilities. This lesson teaches three key patterns for speculating about the future.
～だろう (Probably / I think)
This pattern expresses a conjecture or prediction. It follows the plain form of verbs, adjectives, and nouns. Use でしょう for polite speech.
AIはもっと進化（しんか）するだろう。 — AI will probably evolve further. 未来（みらい）のロボットは便利（べんり）でしょう。 — Robots of the future will probably be convenient.
～にちがいない (Must be / No doubt)
This expresses strong conviction — you are almost certain something is true. It follows the plain form.
自動化（じどうか）は社会（しゃかい）を変（か）えるにちがいない。 — Automation must be changing society. (I have no doubt.) この技術（ぎじゅつ）は危険（きけん）にちがいない。 — This technology must be dangerous.
～可能性（かのうせい）がある (There is a possibility that)
This pattern expresses that something is possible but uncertain. It is commonly used in news and formal discussions.
AIが仕事（しごと）を置（お）き換（か）える可能性（かのうせい）がある。 — There is a possibility that AI will replace jobs. 倫理的（りんりてき）な問題（もんだい）が起（お）きる可能性（かのうせい）がある。 — There is a possibility that ethical issues will arise.
These three patterns form a spectrum from casual guess (だろう) to strong certainty (にちがいない) to objective possibility (可能性がある).

- AIが急速（きゅうそく）に進化（しんか）しているAI is evolving rapidly
- 人間（にんげん）の仕事（しごと）を置（お）き換（か）えるTo replace human jobs
- 倫理的（りんりてき）な問題（もんだい）が生（しょう）じるEthical issues arise
- 便利（べんり）な反面（はんめん）、危険（きけん）もあるWhile convenient, there are also dangers

- 未来（みらい）がどうなるか分（わ）からないWe do not know what the future will be like
よくある間違い
AIは進化するだろうと思いますAIは進化（しんか）するでしょうだろう is already a conjecture form — adding と思います is redundant. Use でしょう for polite conjecture
この技術は危険にちがいありませんこの技術（ぎじゅつ）は危険（きけん）にちがいないにちがいない is a fixed expression — do not conjugate it to ありません. It stays in plain form even in polite contexts
AIが仕事を置き換える可能性がいるAIが仕事（しごと）を置（お）き換（か）える可能性（かのうせい）がある可能性がある uses the existential verb ある (for inanimate things), not いる (which is for living beings)
ロボットは便利だろにちがいないロボットは便利（べんり）にちがいないDo not combine だろう and にちがいない — they are separate conjecture patterns. Choose one based on your level of certainty
自動化の可能性は高い自動化（じどうか）が進（すす）む可能性（かのうせい）は高（たか）い可能性 needs a verb clause describing what might happen — 自動化の可能性 is vague without specifying what automation might do
