The たい Form (Wanting to Do) and なければならない (Must)
These two grammar patterns are essential for job searching conversations.
Wanting to do: Verb stem + たい
Remove ます from the polite form and add たい:
- 働きます → 働きたい (hatarakitai — want to work)
- 見つけます → 見つけたい (mitsuketai — want to find)
たい conjugates like an い-adjective:
- 働きたいです (I want to work — polite)
- 働きたくないです (I do not want to work)
- 働きたかったです (I wanted to work)
Must do: Verb negative stem + なければならない
This pattern expresses obligation:
- 履歴書を書かなければならない (must write a resume)
- 面接に行かなければならない (must go to the interview)
Shorter spoken form: なきゃ (informal)
- 履歴書を書かなきゃ。(I gotta write a resume.)
Job searching vocabulary
- 仕事を探しています。(I am looking for a job.)
- IT の仕事がしたいです。(I want an IT job.)
- 来月までに仕事を見つけなければなりません。(I must find a job by next month.)
Example: 新しい仕事を探しています。エンジニアとして働きたいです。(I am looking for a new job. I want to work as an engineer.)
表現
- 仕事を探しています。Say you are looking for a job
- エンジニアになりたいです。Say you want to become an engineer
- 履歴書を書かなければなりません。Say you must write a resume
- この求人に応募したいです。Say you want to apply for this opening
- 経験がありますか？Ask if someone has experience
- 来週面接があります。Say you have an interview next week

エンジニアをなりたい。エンジニアになりたい。Use に with なる (to become), not を
