この / その / あの — This / That / That Over There
Japanese has three demonstratives based on distance:
- この → this (near me)
- その → that (near you)
- あの → that over there (far from both)
💬 Example: "この シャツは いくらですか？" → "How much is this shirt?"
They always go before a noun:
- この くつ → these shoes
- その ズボン → those pants
- あの ふく → those clothes over there
Sizes in Japan
Sizes are often in katakana:
- エス (S) → small
- エム (M) → medium
- エル (L) → large
💬 Example: "エムの サイズは ありますか？" → "Do you have it in medium?"
Trying on clothes
- しちゃくしても いいですか？ → May I try it on?
表現
- この シャツを くださいThis shirt, please
- しちゃくしても いいですかMay I try it on?
- サイズは ありますかDo you have this size?
- ちょっと おおきいですIt's a bit big
- ちょっと ちいさいですIt's a bit small
- ぴったりですIt fits perfectly
よくある間違い
こ シャツこの シャツIt's この (ko-no), not こ — always use the full two-syllable form
あれの くつあの くつBefore a noun, use あの (not あれの). あれ is used alone
この シャツ は おおきですこの シャツは おおきいですThe adjective is おおきい (with い at the end), not おおき
しちゃく しますしちゃくしても いいですかAdd ても いいですか to ask for permission politely
その は きれいですそれは きれいですその needs a noun after it. Use それ when standing alone
