The Three Japanese Writing Systems
Japanese uses three writing systems simultaneously:
Hiragana (ひらがな)
The basic phonetic alphabet with 46 characters. Used for native Japanese words and grammar. This is what you learn first!
- あ い う え お (a i u e o) — the five vowels
- Each character = one syllable
Katakana (カタカナ)
Same sounds as hiragana but different shapes. Used for foreign loanwords, onomatopoeia, and emphasis.
- コーヒー (koohii) → coffee
- パン (pan) → bread
- テレビ (terebi) → TV
Kanji (漢字)
Chinese characters that represent meanings. You will learn these gradually.
- 山 (yama) → mountain
- 水 (mizu) → water
At A1 level, focus on hiragana first, then katakana. Kanji will come naturally as you progress!
