The を (wo) Particle — Object Marker

In Japanese, the particle (pronounced "o") marks the direct object of a verb — the thing being acted upon.

💬 Example: "パンを たべます" → "I eat bread"

The structure is simple: [object] を [verb]

  • みずを のみます → I drink water
  • にくを たべます → I eat meat
  • くだものを かいます → I buy fruit

たべます & のみます — Eat & Drink

These are the polite (ます) forms of two essential verbs:

  • たべます → to eat (polite)
  • のみます → to drink (polite)

💬 Example: "なにを たべますか?" → "What will you eat?"

The negative form simply replaces ます with ません:

  • たべません → I don't eat
  • のみません → I don't drink

表現

  • おなかが すいたI'm hungry (casual)
  • のどが かわいたI'm thirsty (casual)
  • いただきますSaid before eating (bon appétit)
  • ごちそうさまでしたSaid after eating (thank you for the meal)
  • おいしいですIt's delicious
  • もう おなかいっぱいI'm full already

よくある間違い

  • パンが たべます
    パンを たべます

Use を (not が) to mark the object with action verbs like eat/drink

  • みず のみます
    みずを のみます

Don't forget the を particle between object and verb

  • たべます ごはん
    ごはんを たべます

In Japanese, the object comes BEFORE the verb (SOV order)

  • にくを たべる
    にくを たべます

Use the polite ます form in conversation, not the plain form

  • わたしは パンを たべますか
    パンを たべますか?

Don't add わたしは when asking someone else a question
