Family Words: Humble vs Respectful Forms
Japanese has two sets of family words: one for your own family (humble) and one for someone else's family (respectful).
Your family (humble)
- はは (haha) → my mother
- ちち (chichi) → my father
- あね (ane) → my older sister
- おとうと (otouto) → my younger brother
Someone else's family (respectful)
- おかあさん (okaasan) → your/their mother
- おとうさん (otousan) → your/their father
- おねえさん (oneesan) → your/their older sister
- おとうとさん (otoutosan) → your/their younger brother
The の particle (possession)
Use の to show possession, like English 's:
わたしの かぞく → my family
マリアさんの おかあさん → Maria's mother

- かぞくは なんにんですか？How many people in your family?
- よにんかぞくですWe are a family of four
- あねが ひとり いますI have one older sister
- きょうだいは いますか？Do you have siblings?
- こどもが ふたり いますI have two children
