Emphasis and Focus in Italian

Italian has several tools for putting emphasis on a particular element of the sentence. These constructions are essential at C1 level for structuring clear and persuasive speech.

Cleft Sentences (Frasi Scisse)

The frase scissa isolates an element by placing it after è and before che:

  • *Marco ha rotto il vaso.* → È Marco che ha rotto il vaso. *(It was Marco who broke the vase.)*
  • *Serve pazienza.* → Quello che serve è pazienza. *(What is needed is patience.)*

Dislocation

Italian frequently moves a complement to the front of the sentence to topicalize it:

  • La macchina, l'ho parcheggiata io. *(The car, I parked it.)* — left dislocation
  • L'ho vista, Maria. *(I saw her, Maria.)* — right dislocation

Word Order for Emphasis

In Italian, new or important information is often placed at the end of the sentence:

  • *Ha chiamato Marco.* (emphasis on Marco)
  • *Marco ha chiamato.* (emphasis on the action of calling)

"Proprio" as an Intensifier

The word proprio is a versatile emphasis tool:

  • È proprio questo il problema. *(This is exactly the problem.)*
  • Non ci credo proprio. *(I really don't believe it.)*

Espressioni

  • È Marco che ha chiamato.Cleft sentence to identify the specific subject
  • Quello che serve è pazienza.Pseudo-cleft to highlight what is needed
  • La macchina, l'ho presa io.Left dislocation to topicalize the object
  • Proprio questo intendevo.Proprio as intensifier to insist on exactness
  • Non è che non voglia...Emphatic double negation to soften a refusal
  • Soprattutto, non dimenticare...Fronting the most important point in speech

Errori frequenti

  • È Marco who ha rotto il vaso.
È Marco che ha rotto il vaso.

In Italian cleft sentences, the relative pronoun is che, never who (English calque).

  • Quello che serve è la pazienza.
    Quello che serve è pazienza.

In this emphatic construction, the noun is often placed without the article to reinforce abstraction.

  • La macchina ho parcheggiata io.
    La macchina, l'ho parcheggiata io.

Left dislocation requires a clitic pronoun (l'ho) that refers back to the displaced object.

  • Proprio è questo il problema.
    È proprio questo il problema.

Proprio is placed after è (the verb to be), not before it. The order is: È + proprio + focused element.

  • Non che non voglio, ma...
Non è che non voglia, ma...

The emphatic construction non è che requires the subjunctive (voglia), not the indicative (voglio).
