Present and past participles as adjectives
In B2 Italian, present participles (active form) and past participles (passive/resultative form) are widely used as adjectives to describe emotions and states.
Present participles (-ante / -ente)
Express an active quality: what *produces* the effect
- commovente : émouvant / moving / bewegend
- affascinante : fascinant
- coinvolgente : captivant / entraînant
- rilassante : relaxant
- evocativo : évocateur *(irrégulier)*
*Questa melodia è commovente.* → This melody is moving. *Un testo così coinvolgente è raro.* → Such an engaging text is rare.
Past participles as adjectives
Express a resulting state: what the person *feels*
- commosso/a : ému(e) / emocionado/a / bewegt
- affascinato/a : fasciné(e) / fascinado/a
- coinvolto/a : emporté(e) / einbezogen
- ispirato/a : inspiré(e)
- nostalgico/a : nostalgique *(adjectif)*
*Sono rimasto commosso dall''armonia.* → I was left moved by the harmony. *Uscii dal concerto affascinata e coinvolta.* → I left the concert fascinated and swept up.
Key rule
- The present participle describes the source of the emotion (the music, the artist...).
- The past participle describes the person feeling the emotion.
