Essere vs Avere: how to choose?

Essere (participle agrees with the subject):

  • Movement verbs: andare, venire, partire, arrivare, tornare, uscire
  • State verbs: essere, stare, rimanere
  • All reflexive verbs: alzarsi, divertirsi, rilassarsi

Avere (no agreement):

  • Most transitive verbs: mangiare, vedere, fare, bere, leggere, cucinare

Agreement with essere

With essere, the past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject:

  • Lui è andato / Lei è andata (he went / she went)
  • Loro sono andati / Loro sono andate (they went — masc. / they went — fem.)

💬 Example: "Siamo andati in campagna e ci siamo divertiti molto." *(We went to the countryside and had a lot of fun.)*

💬 Example: "Maria è rimasta a casa perché era stanca." *(Maria stayed home because she was tired.)*
