The verb "essere" (to be) and greetings

In Italian, the verb essere (to be) is one of the most essential verbs you will learn. It is used for introductions, descriptions, and stating where you are from.

Present tense conjugation of "essere":

• io sono → I am
• tu sei → you are (informal)
• lui/lei è → he/she is
• Lei è → you are (formal)
• noi siamo → we are
• voi siete → you all are
• loro sono → they are

Using "essere" for introductions:

💬 Esempio: "Io sono Marco. Piacere!" → "I am Marco. Nice to meet you!"

In spoken Italian, the subject pronoun is often dropped because the verb ending already tells us who is speaking. So "Sono Marco" is more natural than "Io sono Marco."

Formal vs Informal greetings:

• With friends, family, or peers → ciao (informal, used for both hello and goodbye)
• With adults, strangers, or in professional settings → buongiorno (good morning/day) / buonasera (good evening)
• Neutral greeting → salve (works in most situations)
• Formal goodbye → arrivederci (goodbye) / arrivederLa (very formal)

Time-based greetings:

• Morning to early afternoon → buongiorno
• Late afternoon onwards → buonasera
• Before bed → buonanotte (good night)

💬 Esempio: "Buongiorno, professore! Come sta?" → "Good morning, professor! How are you?"

💬 Esempio: "Ciao, Marco! Come stai?" → "Hi, Marco! How are you?"

Notice that "Come sta?" is formal (using the Lei form) while "Come stai?" is informal (using the tu form). Choosing the right level of formality is very important in Italian culture.
