Transport: prendere, andare in, andare a piedi

In Italian, there are three main ways to express how you travel. The choice of preposition depends on the verb used.

1. prendere + article + means of transport:

Use prendere (to take) with the definite article before the vehicle:

• Prendo l'autobus → I take the bus
• Prendo il treno → I take the train
• Prendo la metropolitana → I take the metro
• Prendo il tram → I take the tram
• Prendo l'aereo → I take the plane
• Prendo il taxi → I take a taxi

2. andare in + means of transport (no article):

Use andare in when expressing the mode of transport in general:

• Vado in macchina → I go by car
• Vado in bicicletta → I go by bike
• Vado in treno → I go by train
• Vado in autobus → I go by bus
• Vado in aereo → I go by plane
• Vado in taxi → I go by taxi
• Vado in moto → I go by motorcycle

3. andare a piedi (on foot):

• Vado a piedi → I go on foot / I walk

Key difference: "prendere il treno" means you specifically take that vehicle; "andare in treno" means you travel by train in general.
