C'è / Ci sono + Prepositions of Place

In Italian, to say that something exists or is present in a place, use c'è (there is, singular) and ci sono (there are, plural).

c'è vs ci sono:

• c'è : singular — C'è un tavolo in cucina. (There is a table in the kitchen.)
• ci sono : plural — Ci sono due sedie. (There are two chairs.)

In questions, simply invert: C'è un bagno? (Is there a bathroom?)

In negative form: Non c'è il balcone. (There is no balcony.)

Essential prepositions of place:

• in : in — in cucina (in the kitchen), in camera (in the bedroom)
• su : on — sul tavolo (on the table), sulla sedia (on the chair)
• a : at / to — a casa (at home), a sinistra (to the left)
• sotto : under — sotto il letto (under the bed)
• sopra : above / on top of — sopra l'armadio (on top of the wardrobe)
• vicino a : near / next to — vicino alla finestra (near the window)
• davanti a : in front of — davanti alla porta (in front of the door)
• dietro : behind — dietro il divano (behind the sofa)

Note that a and su combine with articles: a + il = al, su + il = sul, a + la = alla, su + la = sulla.
