1. False amiche avanzate

  • *actually* ≠ attualmente → significa "in realtà / di fatto"
  • *eventually* ≠ eventualmente → significa "alla fine / col tempo"
  • *consistent* ≠ consistente → significa "coerente / regolare"
  • *pretend* ≠ pretendere → significa "fingere"

2. Strutture sintattiche difettose

  • Dangling modifier: *"Having reviewed the data, the report was submitted."* → Chi ha esaminato i dati?
  • Corretto: *"Having reviewed the data, we submitted the report."*
  • Riferimento ambiguo: *"The manager told the analyst that his report was late."* → Di chi è il rapporto?

3. Ridondanze sottili

  • *"past history"* → history implica già il passato
  • *"completely finished"* → finished è già totale
  • *"end result"* → result implica già una conclusione

La coesione: collegare le idee

Usa connettori logici variati per evitare la ripetizione di "and" o "but":

  • Causa: *therefore, hence, consequently, as a result*
  • Concessione: *nevertheless, albeit, while, notwithstanding*
  • Aggiunta: *furthermore, in addition, besides*
  • Contrasto: *conversely, on the contrary, whereas*

Espressioni

  • The sentence is syntactically ambiguoussegnalare che una frase può avere due
  • This paragraph lacks cohesionidentificare un problema di struttura logica
  • Rephrase this for claritychiedere una riformulazione senza specificare come
  • 'Eventually' is a false friend herecorreggere una falsa amica in modo didattico
  • This is redundant — cut itraccomandare di eliminare un elemento superfluo
  • Read it aloud to check the flowtecnica di revisione per rilevare goffaggini
  • This dangling modifier makes the sentence ambiguous.
  • Check for consistency in tense and register.Ricordare un criterio di revisione spesso trascurato

Errori frequenti

  • The results were eventually positive
    The results were ultimately positive

'eventually' = alla fine/col tempo, non eventualmente (=possibly). Falsa amica classica

  • Having reviewed the data, the report was submitted
Having reviewed the data, we submitted the report

  • The past history shows a clear trend
The history shows a clear trend

'Past history' è ridondante — 'history' implica già il passato

  • He is consistent with his work
He is consistent in his work

'consistent' si costruisce con 'in' per descrivere un comportamento regolare

  • Walking through the park, the trees were beautiful.
Walking through the park, I noticed the beautiful trees.

  • The team have been working hard; the project is a failure.
The team have been working hard; however, the project has not met expectations.
