Domande retoriche e socratiche

L''arte del questionare è al cuore del pensiero critico anglofono.

Domande retoriche

Non aspettano risposta — affermano in forma di domanda:

  • *Is this really the best we can do?* → sottintende « no »
  • *Who doesn''t love freedom?* → afferma che tutti amano la libertà

Domande socratiche

Il metodo socratico usa domande per guidare l''interlocutore verso una conclusione:

  • Chiarificazione: *What exactly do you mean by that?*
  • Mettere in discussione le premesse: *What are you assuming here?*
  • Chiedere prove: *What evidence supports that claim?*
  • Esplorare conseguenze: *If that were true, what would follow?*

Consiglio: La chiave è fare domande aperte (*why, how, what if*) piuttosto che chiuse (*yes/no*).

Espressioni

  • What exactly do you mean by...?Chiedere una definizione precisa
  • What are you assuming here?Mettere in discussione un'ipotesi implicita
  • What evidence supports that?Chiedere prove concrete
  • Isn't that a logical fallacy?Identificare un ragionamento errato
  • If that were true, what would follow?Esplorare le conseguenze di un'ipotesi
  • Could you unpack that a little further?Chiedere un approfondimento in modo rispettoso
  • On what basis do you make that claim?Esigere una giustificazione per un argomento avanzato
  • How might we test that assumption?Proporre una verifica empirica di un ipotesi

Errori frequenti

  • That's a fallacy of logic
    That's a logical fallacy

    L'espressione fissa è « logical fallacy », non « fallacy of logic ».

  • This is not an evidence
    This is not evidence

« Evidence » è non numerabile in inglese. Si dice « a piece of evidence ».

  • Your assumption is wrong because I think so
    Your assumption lacks supporting evidence

Un argomento basato su « penso io » non è valido nel pensiero critico.

  • Don't you think that climate change is the biggest threat?
To what extent might climate change pose the greatest threat?

La domanda chiusa Don't you think orienta la risposta. Una domanda aperta con To what extent incoraggia un ragionamento sfumato.

  • Why is your argument wrong?
What might be a potential weakness in this argument?

Chiedere perché un argomento è sbagliato è aggressivo e presuppone il verdetto. Un questionamento C1 invita all autoesame.

  • But what about the other side?
How might a proponent of the opposing view respond to this?

What about the other side è vago e conflittuale. Un questionamento sofisticato formula la prospettiva avversa in modo preciso.
