Errori frequenti

  « Inconclusive » è il termine preciso. « Not conclusive » è corretto ma meno naturale.

• ✗I am not sure but I think it is true
  ✓It would appear to be the case, though further evidence is needed

  In inglese accademico si evitano formulazioni personali dirette.

• ✗Maybe it's true, maybe not
  ✓It remains to be seen whether this holds true

  « Maybe... maybe not » è troppo informale per il contesto accademico.

• ✗I'm pretty sure this is probably correct.
  ✓The evidence tentatively points in this direction.

  Accumulare marcatori di incertezza (pretty sure, probably) indebolisce la credibilità. Un parlante C1 usa un solo marcatore preciso.

• ✗It might be true, or it might not. Who knows?
  ✓The evidence is inconclusive, warranting further investigation.

  Who knows è disinvolto e non accademico. L incertezza va espressa con precisione e rigore intellettuale.

• ✗I can't say for certain, but I think it's probably around 50%.
  ✓Based on the available data, I would estimate approximately 50%.

  Accumulare I can't say for certain, I think e probably è ridondante. Un parlante avanzato sceglie una formulazione concisa e sicura.
