Was / Were + aggettivo: descrivere il passato

Per descrivere come era qualcosa nel passato, usiamo was o were seguito da un aggettivo.

Quando usare was e were?

  • I was → io ero / stavo
  • He / She / It was → lui/lei era
  • You / We / They were → tu eri / noi eravamo / loro erano

Struttura

  • Affermativo: The hotel was beautiful. → L'albergo era bellissimo.
  • Negativo: The food was not bad. → Il cibo non era male.
  • Domanda: Was the trip exciting? → Il viaggio era emozionante?

Forme contratte

  • was not → wasn't
  • were not → weren't

Nota: in inglese, was/were equivale sia a "era" che a "stava/era" in italiano. Il contesto determina il significato.

  • The beach was crowded. → La spiaggia era affollata.
  • He was tired. → Era stanco.
  • It was an amazing trip. → È stato un viaggio incredibile.
